Last night us interns (WT, TG and ML) decided to head down to Union to check out the free Samsung-sponsored Metric show that was highly publicized via twitter all day. Not surprisingly, it was PACKED. If there’s one thing Torontonians love more than a free concert, it’s Metric.
WT was a lucky twitter winner, and found out she won VIP access to the show when we got there.
WT: The VIP access was an unexpected surprise–and a great one at that! I got to stand in the blocked off section right in front of the stage. The view was stellar, of course. Emily Haines was literally right in front of me, and that girl pulls some crazy faces. Even though it was a free show, Metric didn’t hold back one bit and were just as invested in the music and crowd as I’d ever seen them (I’ve seen them twice before). It’s nice to see that even though they’re now featured on the Twilight soundtrack, Metric are still good old hometown heroes they were before.
In the non-VIP section, TG and myself found pretty decent spots to the side of the stage on the street, although we were sandwiched between some exceptionally rambuncous fans. Some honcho from Samsung got on stage first to announce the reason for the free concert, which unsurprisingly, was the launch of a new phone. He was greeted with boos from the crowd who were anxious for Metric. When they did take to the stage, they played a short but sweet set that included new hits like “Gimme Sympathy”, “Satellite Mind” and “Stadium Love”, as well as the old favourite “Dead Disco”.

Photo cred to WT – with her phone camera!
After about an hour it was all over. There was no encore, but hey, what can you expect from a free concert?
